Police officer takes Rotary Peace Fellow lessons to the streets of Philadelphia

In 2010, Police Lt. D.F. Pace applied for the intensive three-month professional certificate program at Rotary’s Peace Center in Thailand. Pace (Chula, 2011) now applies the lessons of the Rotary peace program to the streets of Philadelphia. One of the lessons that Pace imparts comes directly from his time as a peace fellow. “Conflict itself is neither good nor bad. It’s neutral,” he tells officers in his classes. “The good or bad comes from how we manage conflict.”

The due date for peace fellowship candidates to submit applications to their district is 31 May

Our district's second satellite club, the Satellite Club of Southport-Griffith University, was chartered on 10 November before a packed house of around 70 Rotarians and friends.

After a year's planning and work by a dedicated team, Past District Governor (PDG) Sandra Doumany presented new Club Secretary Simon Jeans with the Charter document and inducted the 14 charter members. Satellite Club President Paul Fitzmaurice was inducted about two weeks ago and the Club has several more members set to join.

The Club will hold monthly e-meetings and regular breakfast meetings at an on-campus cafe. Our district has one other satellite club, the Rotary Club of Glen Innes' Satellite Club, and negotiations recently began for the formation of a third satellite club.

It was a terrific launch of a stellar new club!

It was smiles all round on Sunday 11 October when 10 Rotarians completed their final day of Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) training and graduated with flying colours at Lismore, NSW.

District Governor Anne got into the spirit of the moment and donned her academic robe to congratulate the new graduates, and award them their RLI pin and graduation certificate.

Everyone agreed they'd learned things they hadn't previously known about Rotary and that they'd take a lot of useful information and ideas back to their club.

Congratulations to:

Gai Mason (Ballina) Jacqueline Plaice (Burleigh Heads) Andy Rajapakse (Burleigh Heads) Jane Howe (Coomera River) Barry Mason (Lismore West) Karl Causley (Maclean) Mary Lynch (Mt Warning AM) Kaylene Stanford (Mt Warning AM) Peter Kelly (Murwillumbah Central) Hilli Raeburn (Parkwood)

Next RLI course will commence in early 2016, so speak to your Club about nominating for this next course.

Wendy Scarlett District Governor 2014-2015

Is it really twelve months? Surely not. What a wonderful year it has been for us as we travelled around this district and learned of all the club projects and the ways Rotarians help others. You can be proud of your achievements in helping our local communities and those around the world.

It has been a privilege to serve as your District Governor. You have made us feel so welcome at your events and meetings. Thank you for sharing.

The work of Rotary is done at club and individual level. District exists to help you to achieve your goals. We have been pleased to put you in touch with others who can assist you, others who have similar projects and others who can make your job easier.

Thank you to all the Assistant Governors and District Chairs and leadership team who have helped us to support clubs. We appreciate how much time and energy you all dedicate to Rotary and hope that you have found your role rewarding also.

In a few weeks we will farewell our 2014-15 Youth Exchange students. After twelve months they are very much a part of our families, clubs and district. We hope that the memories and friends they have made will stay with them for many years and that they come back to their second homes in the future. We have learned so much from them and they from us. What a great way to build international peace and understanding. Just as in all facets of life, a new group of students will arrive soon to experience our culture and hospitality. We wish them well on their YEP journey.

Special thanks to Tweed Torch editor, Gareth Hunt who has transformed bits of information into a great bulletin every month.

Thank you for all the ways you have all worked to truly “Light Up Rotary”.

January is Rotary Awareness Month. What is Rotary Awareness?

Promoting awareness internally, among Rotarians. Rotary Information, History, and Membership Development, as well–if we talk about committee roles and responsibilities.

Externally let us all think of how we can spread the word and make everyone aware of Rotary. We need to make people aware of who we are, what we do, and what we stand for. So over this month of January let’s think of all ways we can get our message out to others: Let’s Do It, Let’s Talk About Rotary, Lets Light up Rotary!

Susanne Rea saw how social media propelled an event to raise money for polio eradication, and figured she could use the same tools to encourage Rotary clubs around the world to hold similar fundraising meals. To date, clubs and districts have raised over $1 million for Rotary's polio eradication campaign through more than 600 dining events. "At the peak of our registrations, it became an almost around-the-clock commitment," says Rea, "Social media really gave our project momentum."

Pedal Power was the order of the day with this year's Parkwood Rotary's GC100 Charity Bike Event. Over 300 riders set out from Broadwater Parklands at Southport on September 13, to help raise over $17,000 in funds that was divided between Rosie's, ROMAC (Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children) and a number of other local and overseas charities. Despite not being as big as other rides in South East Queensland, the GC100 this year attracted riders from as far away as New Zealand, Victoria, South Australia, NSW and throughout Queensland.

This year's GC100 was organised by the Rotary Club of Parkwood with the support of 94.1FM and NikNat Entertainment and long term supporters Condev Constructions, Gold Coast Physio, Cycle Ox and Accent Press. Past President Mark Twyford was the founder of the GC100, seen here participating in the event.

Each day, Rotarians around the world generously give their time and effort to serve others, often without recognition. Since 1992, the Rotary International Service Above Self Award has honored Rotarians who demonstrate exemplary humanitarian service and embody the motto of Service Above Self. This award recognizes Rotarians for their humanitarian service, rather than their financial contributions or service to Rotary, and offers a means of honoring those who might otherwise go unrecognized. Submit your nominations for the 2014-15 Service Above Self Award by 1 September 2014 to District Governor Wendy Scarlett

Working together to improve Literacy Worldwide

For most of us, reading and writing are as natural as breathing. But nearly 800 million adults
worldwide lack the literacy skills needed to complete a job application, understand a child’s
report card, or read a prescription. Literacy is an essential ingredient for reducing poverty, improving health, encouraging community and economic development and promoting peace

Whether through volunteering your time and expertise, providing financial support, or building awareness, you can empower people and communities through literacy.

Last week I sent out a letter to all the  Presidents, advising  I had commenced a District Bushfire Appeal for the Tasmanian Bushfires primarily, and other areas as needed. I gave $5000 of the District Disaster Relief funds from the 2012-2013 budget.

I never dreamed that I would be writing again so soon to include the floods in Queensland and New South Wales. I am asking all Clubs to dig deep or organise fundraisers urgently to help our fellow Australians in their hour of need. I look forward to a great response from our District
