Richard S. Lawrence won the 2007-08 contest by taking a picture of a boy<br>
inspecting a cup of water at a project in <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place
w:st="on">Guatemala</st1:place></st1:country-region> in which 11 clubs in<br>
District 7890 raised more than US$24,000 to provide water filters,<br>
vented pit latrines, and raised vented stoves for 52 families.<br>

In 1958, the <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">United States</st1:place></st1:country-region>
was well on its way to winning the battle<br>
against polio. Mass immunization using the Salk vaccine had succeeded in<br>
decreasing the number of cases by more than 90 percent from the peak of<br>
58,000 cases in 1952. Field trials of the Sabin oral vaccine had just<br>
begun.<br>
<br>
The same year, the Polio Hall of Fame was established by the <st1:country-region
w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Georgia</st1:place></st1:country-region><br>
Department of Labor's Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for<br>
Rehabilitation. Seventeen pioneering heroes in the early battle against<br>
polio were inducted into the hall, including former U.S. President<br>
Franklin D. Roosevelt and vaccine inventors Jonas Salk and Albert Sabin.<br>
<br>
To commemorate its 50th anniversary, the Polio Hall of Fame will induct<br>
as members the four spearheading partners of the Global Polio<br>
Eradication Initiative: Rotary International, the World Health<br>
Organization, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and<br>
UNICEF.<br>
<br>
The induction ceremony will take place on 14 November at 3:30 p.m. in<br>
the institute's quadrangle, featuring special guest speakers Dr.<br>
Peter Salk, eldest son of Dr. Jonas Salk, and Missouri Congressman Ike<br>
Skelton, a former Warm Springs polio patient.<br>
<br>
Representatives of the new inductee organizations and family members of<br>
the original inductees will attend the ceremony, and the public is also<br>
invited. Rotary Foundation Trustee John Germ, who chairs Rotary's<br>
US$100 Million Challenge Committee, will represent Rotary International.<br>
<br>
The inductee organizations will be honored on a large bronze plaque<br>
detailing their contributions to ongoing polio eradication efforts, and<br>
the contributions of the original inductees will be highlighted with a<br>
matching plaque. Both plaques will be permanently displayed in front of<br>
the Polio Hall of Fame's monument outside Founders Hall, which was<br>
unveiled by Eleanor Roosevelt in 1958.<br>
<br>
Following the ceremony, attendees are invited to a reception at 18:30<br>
and a Franklin D. Roosevelt's Founders Day Dinner at 19:00 in the<br>
institute's Georgia Hall. Cost of the reception and dinner is $175 per<br>
person, with proceeds benefiting the Roosevelt Warm Springs Development<br>
Fund.<br>
<br>
"It promises to be a great day and a great way to recognize what the<br>
four global partners are doing," says Greg Schmieg, executive director<br>
of the institute. "The fact that polio was pretty much eradicated in<br>
this country 50 years ago doesn't change the fact that it is still an<br>
ongoing problem in many parts of the world, and what Rotary and the<br>
others have done and continue to do remains a tremendous example that<br>
deserves to be honored."<br>

know how to throw a party.<br>
<br>
For the past 25 years, the Rotary Club of Monterrico-Surco has been<br>
hosting what it calls an annual "happiness caravan" for low-income<br>
seniors in the <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Lima</st1:place></st1:City>
area, serving up food, music, and dancing as well as<br>
tending to the seniors' medical and personal needs.<br>
<br>
"We are going to give you one happy day for 364 ordinary days," explains<br>
July Gereda de Carlin, a past president of the club and one of the<br>
event's organizers.<br>
<br>
The event got its name in its early years, when club members used their<br>
cars to shuttle seniors on tours of the city and gatherings at a local<br>
park.<br>
<br>
Later, for the comfort of the seniors, the club switched to buses and<br>
moved the event to a school gym.<br>
<br>
The most recent event, held in September, was attended by 320 seniors. A<br>
well-known musical act performed, and a national champion dancer, the<br>
grandson of a Rotarian, demonstrated the traditional Peruvian marinera.<br>
The seniors also were treated to a "crazy hour," with Interactors and<br>
Rotaractors handing out balloons and Rotarians donning festive hats. The<br>
crowd celebrated like it was a "big Carnival party," Gereda de Carlin<br>
says.<br>
<br>
"They feel they are again in their young times, when they went to the<br>
Carnival parties," she says. "Everyone wants to dance."<br>
<br>
The lunch included rice with chicken, tuna sandwiches, desserts, and<br>
Inca Kola, a Peruvian soft drink, all prepared or donated by Rotarians<br>
and their relatives and friends. Dorit Gross, the wife of Past RI<br>
Director Gustavo Gross, obtained 75 donated cakes, a task she's<br>
performed since the first happiness caravan.<br>
<br>
In addition to the food and festivities, the seniors were given<br>
makeovers including haircuts and manicures, and Rotarian doctors and<br>
their colleagues provided medical care. Participants were sent home with<br>
gifts like scarves and personal care items.<br>
<br>
Gereda de Carlin, District 4450 governor nominee, says she plans to<br>
encourage all the clubs in her district to do a similar project when she<br>
is governor.<br>
<br>
"It's a lot of work, but people are very grateful," she says.
"You<br>
feel your heart is big."<br>

creepiest club projects<br>
you're likely to run into — but in a good way.<br>
<br>
Last year, the Rotary Club of Sammamish, Washington, USA, raised more<br>
than $100,000 through its haunted adventure at <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceName
w:st="on">Beaver</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType w:st="on">Lake</st1:PlaceType>
<st1:PlaceType w:st="on">Park</st1:PlaceType></st1:place>,<br>
entertaining thousands of children and their parents. The Halloween<br>
event this year runs from 24 October through 31 October.<br>
<br>
Proceeds are used to support club service projects, help local<br>
charities, and support RI projects that address the Millennium<br>
Development Goals.<br>
<br>
The Sammamish club, chartered in 2003, launched Nightmare at <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceName
w:st="on">Beaver</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType w:st="on">Lake</st1:PlaceType></st1:place><br>
as a way of involving the city's sizable teenage population in the<br>
planning and execution of an event they'd also be drawn to as<br>
customers, says Dee Hoeke, the club's 2004-05 president. The event<br>
has grown from 4,000 visitors during four nights in 2004 to an<br>
eight-night production attracting more than 10,000 visitors.<br>
<br>
Through the process, the club has formed a broad partnership with local<br>
businesses, youth groups, high school students, and the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceName
w:st="on">Sammamish</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType w:st="on">City</st1:PlaceType></st1:place><br>
Parks Department. The event is co-produced by Scare Productions, a<br>
nonprofit organization with more than 20 years' experience staging<br>
haunted-house events.<br>
<br>
"We literally involve hundreds of people in the community to put on the<br>
show for the enjoyment of thousands," says Anita Boser, press secretary<br>
of the Sammamish club.<br>

Each year's theme is unique. This year, participants encounter<br>

way along a three-quarter-mile wooded trail with indoor and outdoor<br>

"A medieval battle is underway to win the castle back from a vampire<br>
clan, an evil hag has placed a curse on the poor villagers, and fairy<br>
tales are being fractured," says Dana Young, a Sammamish resident and<br>
volunteer.<br>

college scholarships,<br>
computers for schools in <st1:country-region w:st="on">Uganda</st1:country-region>,
wells in <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Ethiopia</st1:place></st1:country-region>,
and a literacy<br>
program for third-graders in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceName w:st="on">King</st1:PlaceName>

Thanksgiving baskets for needy families and fresh fruit and vegetables<br>
for local food banks.<br>

Enrichment Organization for developmentally challenged adults, the YMCA<br>
Partner with Youth program, and DECA.<br>
