With diabetes a leading cause of death in <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place
w:st="on">Mexico</st1:place></st1:country-region>, two Rotary clubs in<br>
San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, organized a conference to bring<br>
together medical professionals from both the <st1:country-region w:st="on">United
States</st1:country-region> and <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place
w:st="on">Mexico</st1:place></st1:country-region> to<br>
address the issue.<br>
<br>
The Diabetes Conference in San Miguel, held 10-12 April, was<br>
<st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Mexico</st1:place></st1:country-region>'s
first-ever bilingual conference on diabetes and the first<br>
organized entirely by Rotarians. The village, a popular tourist<br>
destination, has a sizable English-speaking population.<br>
<br>
More than 200 doctors and health care professionals took part in the<br>
event, educating health care providers on better detection and treatment<br>
of the disease. At least 300 members of the public attended sessions,<br>
conducted in both English and Spanish, raising awareness of diabetes,<br>
and ways to prevent its onset. Free diabetes testing and glucose<br>
monitoring devices were provided.<br>
<br>
William B. Webb, international service director for the co-sponsoring<br>
Rotary Club of Tallahassee, Florida, USA, said the conference armed more<br>
than 500 villages in the area with knowledge and resources to combat the<br>
disease.<br>
<br>
The event was paid for with a grant from pharmaceutical company Eli<br>
Lilly. The Municipality of San Miguel de Allende also provided financial<br>
and logistical support.<br>
<br>
"We realized that diabetes, especially here in Guanajuato, is a major<br>
health problem," said Salvador Quiroz, an internist at Hospital de la Fe<br>
and a member of the San Miguel Allende club, in a press release. "That<br>
is why we organized this conference."<br>
<br>
The three clubs, along with the Rotary Club of St. Francisville,<br>
<st1:State w:st="on">Louisiana</st1:State>, <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place
w:st="on">USA</st1:place></st1:country-region>, also secured a Matching Grant
from The Rotary Foundation<br>
for a digital camera and laser, which will be donated to the town's<br>
general hospital, for the diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy, a common<br>
cause of blindness in adults.<br>
Roots of the idea Webb chose San Miguel de Allende to partner with for a
service project<br>
because he had been charmed by the town during a visit years earlier. In<br>
2007, he attended a service projects committee meeting of the San Miguel<br>
midday club, and knew he'd discovered the core of a project<br>
management team. They chose the topic of diabetes because both clubs had<br>
experts on the subject, and it's a leading health concern in the<br>
country.<br>

Dr. Larry C. Deeb, a <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Tallahassee</st1:place></st1:City>
club member and pediatric<br>
endocrinologist, spoke on the modern management of the disease. He noted<br>
that <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Mexico</st1:place></st1:country-region>
has one of the highest rates of diabetes in the world. Other<br>
experts included Dr. José Ángel Córdova Villalobos, health<br>
secretary of <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Mexico</st1:place></st1:country-region>;
Dr. James R. Gavin III, an endocrinologist<br>
specializing in diabetes and member of the Rotary Club of Atlanta; and<br>
Dr. Claudia Karina Anaya, an epidemiologist with the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceName
w:st="on">Health</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType w:st="on">Center</st1:PlaceType></st1:place>
of<br>
San Miguel.<br>
<br>
Webb gives much of the credit for organizing the event to the host<br>
clubs.<br>
<br>
"The Rotarians in San Miguel are the real heroes, in my opinion," he<br>
says. "They got it all organized in a remarkably short time."<br>

writings from VIP<br>
members like Paul Harris, Chesley Perry, and Silvester Schiele; minutes<br>
of board of directors meetings dating back to 1920; a scrapbook<br>
assembled by Perry; a collection of documents about women of Rotary from<br>
1921 to 1995; and other important records such as bylaws and early<br>
newsletters.<br>

, and his wife gave more than<br>
US$40,000 to launch the project.<br>

"Through working with the Rotary Global History Fellowship, I could see<br>
what Rotary historians around the world are doing to preserve Rotary<br>
history, and I thought that Rotary One (the Rotary Club of Chicago)<br>
should certainly promote its archives too," says McKay.<br>
<br>
Past club president David Templin headed the archives project, and<br>
consultants Jane Kenamore and Laura Lorenzana were hired to begin<br>
electronically archiving the massive collection.<br>
<br>
"The Rotary One archives are fantastic," says Kenamore. "The
files<br>
contain early correspondence of Paul Harris and other leaders of Rotary.<br>
They have a tremendous amount of material."<br>
Early letters<br>
Some of the team's favorite items are correspondence between Perry and<br>
Harris about the role of women in Rotary, Perry's letter of resignation,<br>
and photos of early members enjoying a belly-dancing performance at a<br>
Rotary celebration.<br>
<br>
Templin helped publicize the project among club members by making<br>
photocopies of some of the interesting finds and passing them out at<br>
meetings.<br>
<br>
The club introduced the electronic archives at its booth at the 2008 RI<br>
Convention in <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Los Angeles</st1:place></st1:City>.<br>
<br>
Templin says the club plans to continue scanning documents from the<br>
collection as they're requested by members and other Rotarians<br>
worldwide. Archives visitors can also search through a list of archived<br>
materials not yet posted online--including dozens of documents related<br>
to other Rotary clubs, such as a letter from a Japanese club in the<br>
1930s and letters from a club in <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Shanghai</st1:place></st1:City>
in the 1920s.<br>
<br>
"We thought this was a great opportunity to give something back, to get<br>
20,000 documents scanned and onto the Internet and make them available<br>
to Rotarians and historians worldwide," says Templin. "Today is a<br>
different challenge from the last 100 years. It'll be interesting to see<br>
how the Rotarians of the next 100 years track their activities."<br>
