When I look at our ticking clock on the HOC website,<br>
www.rotaryconvention2009.com I can hardly<br>
<br>
believe what I see. When the site went live we had well over four<br>
hundred days to go before the<br>
<br>
Convention and now it is under two hundred and thirty. Where has the<br>
time gone?<br>
<br>
It has certainly been well spent. Confirmed speakers include Mia Farrow,<br>
Dame Jane Goodall, Deepa<br>
<br>
Willingham and Tom Henderson. Archbishop Desmond Tutu has agreed to<br>
address the Peace<br>
<br>
Symposium prior to the Convention and there are more top names on the<br>
way. At RI Conventions there<br>
<br>
is always entertainment in the plenary sessions and 2009 will exceed<br>
your expectations. A sixty strong<br>
<br>
troupe is flying in from <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Korea</st1:place></st1:country-region>,
which includes the "Little Angels of<br>
<st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Korea</st1:place></st1:country-region>"
with their song and dance<br>
<br>
routines, which have been a hit all over the world. They will be joined<br>
by the Band of the Royal Marines and entertainers from<br>
<br>
<st1:country-region w:st="on">England</st1:country-region>, <st1:country-region
w:st="on">Scotland</st1:country-region>, <st1:country-region w:st="on">Ireland</st1:country-region>
and <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Wales</st1:place></st1:country-region>.
The Closing Event will be a one<br>
hour costumed spectacular of British Musicals featuring<br>
<br>
Liz Robertson, Yi Taewon and Robert Meadmore, all stars of the <st1:place
w:st="on">West End</st1:place><br>
stage. All of that is included in the registration fee of<br>
<br>
course, as is Transport to and from the NEC and HOC events for those not<br>
using their own cars.<br>
<br>
Our own HOC events programme must be the finest entertainment programme<br>
of any convention anywhere. Beginning with<br>
<br>
Katherine Jenkins and the City of <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Birmingham
Symphony Orchestra</st1:place></st1:City>; moving<br>
on to <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Warwick</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType
w:st="on">Castle</st1:PlaceType></st1:place>; a great Host Hospitality<br>
<br>
evening and then a "Night on the Town" featuring The Birmingham<br>
Royal Ballet, The Treorchy Male Voice Choir and a fantastic<br>
<br>
"East meets West" show, all in addition to Street Theatre,<br>
wonderful restaurants and great shopping. Rarely can Rotarians have<br>
<br>
had such an incredible opportunity. When did any Convention put on stage<br>
the World's leading classical diva, as Katherine<br>
<br>
Jenkins must now surely be following her $11 million dollar deal with<br>
Warner Music, and one of the World's top ten Symphony<br>
<br>
Orchestras? This is the chance of a lifetime to see Katherine perform<br>
with low ticket prices at a fraction of what one would<br>
<br>
normally pay. We have already booked over double the tickets for HOC<br>
events that we expected at this stage and which we were<br>
<br>
advised by RI to expect.<br>
<br>
On Saturday 20th June 2009 proceedings start at the NEC with a Grand<br>
Parade of the Nations, which will lead on to the opening<br>
<br>
of the House of Friendship, the largest in Rotary history. 25,000 square<br>
metres of fun, meeting space, non-stop entertainment<br>
<br>
and much, much, more. There will never be a better opportunity for<br>
Rotarians in RIBI to attend an RI Convention. Remember<br>
<br>
this is only the fourth time one has been held in these islands in a<br>
hundred years and it won't come again for a very, very long<br>
<br>
time. Six thousand of us live within a one hour drive of the NEC, car<br>
parking will be free and for those folk there need be no hotel<br>
<br>
bills. For those from farther away at least travel costs will be<br>
reasonable by comparison with going to <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Los
Angeles</st1:place></st1:City> this year or<br>
<br>
<st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Montreal</st1:place></st1:City> next
year.<br>

Rotary International have confirmed that Keynote Speakers at the<br>

Plenary Sessions of the Convention 2009 include Mia Farrow, actress,<br>

primatologist and humanitarian, Deepa Willingham, Founder of PACE<br>

Renowned primatologist Dame Jane Goodall's presentation at the<br>
Convention<br>
<br>
will focus on her conservation work as well as Roots & Shoots, her<br>
global<br>
<br>
environmental and humanitarian youth programme. Dame Jane began her<br>
landmark<br>
<br>
study of chimpanzees in <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Tanzania</st1:place></st1:country-region>
in June 1960 under the mentorship of<br>
<br>
anthropologist and palaeontologist Dr. Louis Leakey. Her work at Gombe<br>
Stream<br>
<br>
would become the foundation of future primatological research and<br>
redefine the<br>
<br>
relationship between humans and animals. One of Dame Jane's most<br>
significant<br>
<br>
discoveries came in her first year at Gombe, when she saw chimpanzees<br>
<br>
stripping leaves off stems to make tools for fishing termites out of<br>
nearby<br>
<br>
mounds. This and subsequent observations would force scientists to<br>
rethink the<br>
<br>
definition that separated man from other animals: "man the
toolmaker."<br>
Dame<br>
<br>
Jane also observed chimps hunting and eating bushpigs and other animals,<br>
<br>
disproving the widely held belief that chimpanzees were primarily<br>
vegetarians.<br>
<br>
In April 2002, then Secretary-General Kofi Annan appointed Dame Jane to<br>
serve<br>
<br>
as a United Nations Messenger of Peace. She was reappointed in June 2007<br>
by<br>
<br>
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. In 2004, Prince Charles invested her as a<br>
<br>
Dame of the <st1:place w:st="on">British Empire</st1:place>, the female
equivalent of knighthood. In<br>
2006, Dame<br>
<br>
Jane received the French Legion of Honor, presented by Prime Minister<br>
<br>
Dominique de Villepin, as well as the UNESCO Gold Medal.<br>
<br>
KEYNOTE SPEAKERS ANNOUNCED<br>
<br>
All the things I have referred to thus far are great reasons to attend,<br>
but there is more. An RI Convention is, quite simply, the<br>
<br>
greatest Rotary Show on Earth. <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Birmingham</st1:place></st1:City>
will bring together Rotarians<br>
from around 120 countries, providing a wonderful<br>
<br>
opportunity for Rotary Fellowship, for learning about what happens in<br>
other parts of the Rotary World and for making new friendships<br>
<br>
which often become lifelong. If you belong to one of Rotary's many<br>
fellowships have a look at your fellowship's web site<br>
<br>
and see what is arranged especially for you.<br>
<br>
In truth every Rotarian ought to experience an RI Convention at least<br>
once in their Rotary lives. For Club Presidents there is an<br>
<br>
invitation to attend the Lord Mayor of <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Birmingham</st1:place></st1:City>'s
Grand Reunion<br>
Breakfast on Saturday morning 20th June. Book on the HOC<br>
<br>
ticket form.<br>

And, finally one more important reason to attend. The RI President for<br>
2009/10 will be John Kenny from the Rotary Club of<br>
<br>
Grangemouth in <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Scotland</st1:place></st1:country-region>.
It is nearly fifteen years since RIBI produced<br>
an RI President, so President Elect John's appointment<br>
<br>
is one in which we can all take great pleasure. He will be in <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place
w:st="on">Birmingham</st1:place></st1:City><br>
with his family and will address the Convention setting<br>
<br>
out his thoughts for the ensuing year. John and June deserve our<br>
support, so let's give it to them.<br>
<br>
So! Take the plunge and register for the 100th Rotary Convention, book<br>
your place at the great HOC events on offer and be<br>
<br>
assured of a fabulous experience. Because it is the 100th Convention,<br>
both RI and the HOC are working to make it a very special<br>
<br>
event indeed. Please be positive and see the Convention for the great<br>
opportunity it is and be part of it, not apart from it. You can<br>
<br>
register on-line, book hotels (if you need them) and sign up for the HOC<br>

you can use snail mail, but beat the deadline. After December 15th all<br>
