Asbjørn Austvik, who served on the Rotary International Board of<br>
Directors from 1990-92, died 1 January.<br>
<br>
Austvik, of <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Trondheim</st1:City>, <st1:country-region
w:st="on">Norway</st1:country-region></st1:place>, joined the Rotary Club of
Trondeim in<br>
1955. In addition to serving on the RI Board, he was governor of<br>
District 2300 in 1977-78 and aide to the RI president in 1998-99. He<br>
held other RI positions, including International Assembly discussion<br>
leader, committee member and chair, and vice chair of the European<br>
Regional PolioPlus Committee, and served as Rotary Foundation trustee<br>
from 1992-95.<br>
<br>
Austvik retired as director of the Thomas Angell Foundation, in<br>
<st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Trondheim</st1:place></st1:City>.
Chair of a housing development company, he was a member of<br>
the Fulbright Alumni Association of Norway and was active with the Royal<br>
Norwegian Council for Scientific and Industrial Research. He was also a<br>
former assistant professor at <st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Dartmouth</st1:PlaceName>
<st1:PlaceType w:st="on">College</st1:PlaceType>, in <st1:State w:st="on">New
Hampshire</st1:State>, <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">USA</st1:place></st1:country-region>.<br>
<br>
Funeral services will be held on 9 January at the Cathedral of<br>
<st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Trondheim</st1:place></st1:City>.
Austvik is survived by his wife, Eva, and son, Dag.<br>

U.S. Interactors are honoring a classmate who died in a car accident in<br>
2006 by fulfilling her vision of distributing school supplies to<br>
children in <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Mexico</st1:place></st1:country-region>.<br>

The Interact Club of <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Etna</st1:PlaceName>
<st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Union</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType w:st="on">High

has distributed over 400 backpacks filled with crayons,<br>
scissors, paper, and other supplies to grade school students in places<br>
like <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Ensenada</st1:place></st1:City>
and Tixkokob.<br>

The project was first envisioned by club member Antonia Cornell-Banke,<br>
who came up with the idea after several trips to <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place
w:st="on">Mexico</st1:place></st1:country-region> with the<br>
school's Spanish club.<br>
<br>
"I knew her as a really caring person who was really involved in the<br>
community," says Javier Hansen, president of the Etna Interact club and<br>
member of the Spanish club.<br>
<br>
After Antonia's death, her fellow Interactors carried out her vision,<br>
naming the project "Toni's Backpacks" in her honor.<br>
<br>
Members of the Spanish club have helped out, distributing the school<br>
supplies during their annual trip to <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place
w:st="on">Mexico</st1:place></st1:country-region>.<br>
<br>
"It's become a favorite part of their trip. When they finish handing out<br>
the backpacks, they want to be a part of Interact too," says <st1:City
w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Davie</st1:place></st1:City><br>
Martin, a member of the Rotary Club of Scott Valley (<st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceType
w:st="on">Ft.</st1:PlaceType> <st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Jones</st1:PlaceName></st1:place>)
and<br>
adviser to the Etna Interact club. Martin helps the Interactors connect<br>
with Rotary clubs in <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Mexico</st1:place></st1:country-region>
to find schools in need of the supplies.<br>
<br>
The Interact club raises funds to support the project by organizing<br>
charity basketball games between the school's varsity boys' team and a<br>
local law enforcement team. They also solicit support for the project<br>
throughout the community; US$20 sends a backpack loaded with supplies to<br>
a student in <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Mexico</st1:place></st1:country-region>.<br>

other regional Interact<br>
